Security Council

Committee history:

The Security Council is a United Nations organ that takes the lead in finding the existence of threats against peace or acts of aggression. It recommends methods of adjustment or terms of settlement. It can resort to imposing sanctions or even authorizing the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security.

Topic: The Diplomatic Crisis between the United States and Iran and its Possible Threats to International Security .

The recent US-Iran crisis has its origin in the revival of the Iranian nuclear program. Iranian tests of ballistic missiles in the Persian Gulf triggered new economic sanctions and the cancelation of a transcendental nuclear agreement signed in 2015 by Iran and 6 global powers.
Additional full scale hostilities occurred in June 2019 with the attack made to two British oil tankers and the shooting down of a US surveillance drone.
The geopolitical impact has  also been magnified by other regional actors such as Israel and Saudi Arabia who mistrust the Iranian regional power.

“More than ever before in human history, we share a common destiny. We can master it only if we face it together. And that, my friends, is why we have the United Nations.”

-Kofi Annan (7th Secretary-General of the United Nations)
